An Introduction to Teaching and Supporting Transgender and Gender Creative Students

Transgender and gender creative youth experience the highest rates of bullying, absenteeism, dropping out, poor mental health (Miller et al. 2013; Kosciw et al. 2014) and suicidal tendencies (Ybarra et al. 2014) at schools worldwide. All educators have a duty to affirm, support and empower transgender and gender creative students, and to confront underlying causes of transphobia including our own complicity in hetero- and gender-normativity.

This course is an introduction to the exploration of gender, and what it means to be transgender or gender creative through the voices of students and how to create safe learning environments for all students.

In this course, we’ll

  • Understand gender as a social construct and confront harmful gender stereotypes
  • Reflect on transgender and gender creative students’ school experiences and how we can improve the school environment
  • Understand inclusion strategies and queer cultural capital, and how this can be applied in our own classrooms

This is a 6 hour course.

Course dates:
Wednesday 5th, 12th and 19th June 2024

9 a.m. – 11 a.m. (UK time) OR 18.00 – 20.00 (UK time)
